Red's Player's Ball

Last Sunday, we celebrated the birthday of a friend of mine, Carmena (DJ Red Corvette). She hosted a Player's Ball themed party at a loft in Oakland. I love themed parties and if I could have lived in any other era, it would have been the 1970's for sure. I sort of struggled with finding something to wear because my go-to source for all things retro fashion (my mom) didn't have anything that fit me this go around. She literally had brand new suede outfits from back in the day that she has never worn, tags in tact. Although I am super proud of my fitness journey and recent small weight loss, it is making it hard for me to pull fitted pieces.

I went with a dress that I got from Asos a few years ago because it was bright and a kaftan that I had custom made a while back for a vacation. Custom made kaftans are the way to go considering the price of maxi pieces online. During my search, every single kaftan that I liked was well over $100 which is sort of pricey for a vacation piece that is such a light fabric. So, I purchased my own fabric and took a photo to my seamstress of what I wanted and she made this wonderful masterpiece. For my hair, I picked out a curly wig that I had laying around the house into an afro...and voilà!

Everybody looked amazing and it was a great time.

Happy Birthday Carmena!
