Office Fashion with a Twist

When it comes to the color black in the fashion world, you simply cannot go wrong. It is elegant, refined, always on-trend, chic, some say slimming, and most of all classic. This color has all of the makings of a perfectly functional wardrobe…and I hate it. By hate it, I mean it is always my last choice.

Looking into my closet, you will experience a sea of colors: turquoise, neon green, hot pink, mustard yellow, and maybe two black shirts. When I think about fashion and styling, practical is the last thing that comes to mind. I want to look how I feel and I want to feel fun. Colors excite me and they immediately command your attention effortlessly. My affinity to the rainbow bright chromism has worked for me most of my life, but things change when you begin to work in quasi-professional settings. Once I began my career, I figured out a way to “get away” with a lot. Even in work environments, it’s important to stay true to who you are and that also translates to your appearance.

So although my gig would prefer that I rock garments that reflect a more subtle appearance, I’m not subscribing to the collared shirt and slacks only lifestyle. I’m not a member of that tribe. If they want me in black and white, they can have me in black and white…but not without a little twist. I paired my white collared button down shirt with black tailored overalls. I was drawn to the grommets in the chest panel which provided me with a touch of pizzazz (enough for the office). I decided to top it all off with black patent pumps and a tangerine topcoat. When I first saw this coat, it was like love at first site. Easy to pair with tailored pants, a skirt, or jeans.

If you don’t work, you don’t eat. But don’t forget that the work starts with you and the way that you feel about YOURSELF.
